The Hubble Telescope has shown us amazing pictures of the vastness of the universe. We have seen galaxies, stars, nebulae, and other areas of space that we never dreamed of. The vastness and the overall beauty of our universe cries out of the glory of God. At the same time, man has made more and more discoveries related to the microscopic universe. Quarks, Leptons, Charms, and Strangeness, while not in our everyday vocabulary, are the microscopic equivalent of those galaxies and stars. It’s easy to get lost in the ultimate reaches of the universe or the “innerverse” but even more important is finding practical uses for those microscopic elements. One man who did that was Percy Lavon Julian. Dr. Julian received about 130 patents for his work in studying the chemical fusion of medicinal drugs derived from plants. His work on things we can’t see with the naked eye made medicine better and cheaper for us all.
The amazing creative power of God is seen in the vastness of the universe as well as the intricacies of the microscopic world. As we build better microscopes to probe this innerverse, we find more and more of the details of God’s handiwork. Many scientists continue their probing because they think that in each small particle they are discovering the secrets of the universe that will show the natural development of life and do away with the “need” for God. As people of faith, we see these discoveries and marvel at God’s design. The author of Hebrews put it this way. “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” (Hebrews 11:3)
Each discovery of a microscopic particle lends credence to this verse. These particles are not visible to the naked eye, and new particles are only discovered by equipment costing millions of dollars. To those who deny the existence of God, they justify the cost because discovery in and of itself is important. I believe that human beings have a natural curiosity and drive to discover that was built in by God. These discoveries, often fueled by the desire to show that God doesn’t exist, actually show this nature that God gave us and prove the truth of this verse. God exists. God creates. As scientists seek greater discoveries in nature at the cosmic level or at the microscopic level, they are missing the true greatness of God’s creation: man himself. When God looked on all that He had created the only day that God finished and called “very good” was the day He created man. In all the biological work that man has done on man, there is still so much mystery that we can continue to say that man was made out of that which is not visible.
We must look at mankind and realize that there is a spiritual nature to our being that science will not be able to discover. That spiritual nature is what drives us to seek God. Some have sought to suppress that nature by immersing themselves in science. They have made themselves blind to the amazing design of God in our world. Some have deadened that nature by fighting against God and delving into sinful behavior. As followers of Christ, we are called to revive that nature in others. We must see the advances in science not as attacks on God, but as revelations of the power of God. We must look on the decadence of our sinfulness and realize the wonderful, life-giving forgiveness of God that allows us to come into fellowship with Him and to help anyone overcome their sin and fellowship with Him. One thing that science will never be able to see is the love and forgiveness of God. Our job is to show the effects of God’s love and forgiveness to all people.
Lord, so many people can’t see Your love and forgiveness. Use me to show them the effects of Your love.
